Baghdad, Iraq – 01 Jule 2026

The Coalition for Economic Inequality in Iraq welcomes the recent actions taken by the Government of Iraq to investigate corruption involving senior public officials. Holding those responsible for the misuse of public resources accountable is an important step toward strengthening the rule of law, restoring public trust, and promoting transparent governance.

Corruption is one of the main drivers of economic inequality in Iraq. When public resources are diverted for private gain, citizens lose access to quality public services, decent jobs, and equal opportunities. Women, youth, marginalized communities, internally displaced persons, and low-income families are often the most affected.

The Coalition believes that tackling corruption is essential to building a fairer economy. Public funds recovered through accountability measures should be reinvested in healthcare, education, job creation, and social protection to ensure Iraq’s wealth benefits all citizens, not a privileged few.

However, lasting progress requires more than arrests. Sustainable reform depends on strong oversight institutions, an independent judiciary, transparent public spending, and meaningful participation by civil society, the media, and citizens in promoting accountability.

The Coalition calls for all investigations to be conducted fairly, transparently, and in accordance with the rule of law. It remains committed to working with government institutions, civil society, researchers, the private sector, media, and development partners to advance evidence-based policies that reduce inequality and create a more inclusive and prosperous Iraq for all.
