The Iraqi judiciary seized 25 billion dinars, 1 million dollars, and approximately five kilograms of gold hidden inside plastic water bottles at the home of the Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs, Adnan Al-Jumaili, in the city of Tikrit.
In a statement reviewed by the Kirkuk Now website on Monday, July 6, the judiciary indicated that the total seized financial amounts rose to (127) billion dinars and (24) million dollars, in addition to the seized real estate, vehicles, and gold jewelry. It emphasized that investigations and the pursuit of other involved parties are ongoing until all legal procedures are completed.
These judicial procedures and other governmental moves under the banner of anti-corruption have garnered widespread attention from the public and civil society organizations in Iraq. In this context, the “United for Economic Equality” coalition issued a statement welcoming the measures to curb corruption and calling for sustainable structural reforms.
The coalition stressed that corruption is one of the primary causes of economic inequality in Iraq, calling for sustainable structural reforms, strengthening the role of regulatory institutions, ensuring the independence of the judiciary, and entrenching transparency in public spending management, thereby contributing to the building of a more just, prosperous, and inclusive Iraq.
The United for Economic Equality Coalition is a national alliance comprising nine Iraqi civil society organizations, research centers, and media institutions working together to promote economic justice through research, public awareness, public policy dialogue, and advocacy activities.
With support from Oxfam, the coalition is implementing the “Combating Economic Inequality Campaign – Strengthening Coalition Action to Address Economic Inequality in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq,” aimed at addressing the structural causes of inequality and supporting policies that contribute to building a fairer, more transparent, and more inclusive economy for all Iraqis.
